As motivational speaker Zig Ziglar famously said, "You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great." At St. Cloud Technical & Community College, those words take on special meaning each fall as we welcome a new academic year and the students who are taking that first step on their educational journey toward their futures.
Every student who arrives on campus brings a unique story. They come with aspirations, ambitions, and hope for a better tomorrow. Some are the first in their family to pursue a college education. Others are returning to school to gain new skills, change careers, or advance professionally. Many are balancing coursework with jobs, family responsibilities, and life's daily challenges. Yet despite their different backgrounds and experiences, they all share one thing: the decision to start.
And that decision has the power to change everything.
Education is one of the most transformative forces in our society. It is far more than the pursuit of a degree, diploma, or credential. Education unlocks potential, creates opportunity, and empowers individuals to build lives of purpose and prosperity. It changes trajectories not only for students, but also for their families, future generations, and the communities they call home.
At SCTCC, we witness that transformation every day.
Our students pursue careers in healthcare, manufacturing, information technology, skilled trades, business, and countless other fields that are essential to the success of Central Minnesota. Others are earning associate degrees that serve as a foundation for continued education and future career opportunities. Regardless of their path, each student is investing in themselves, their future, and the vitality of our communities.
Their success matters because education fuels prosperity. When students gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enter meaningful careers, they strengthen our workforce, support local businesses, increase earning potential for their families, and contribute to the overall quality of life in Central Minnesota and beyond. Every graduate represents not only a personal achievement but also an investment in the future success of our region.
Of course, meaningful achievement rarely happens alone.
Behind every student's success story is a network of support, encouragement, and belief. Family members, friends, mentors, employers, and others often play a crucial role in helping students persevere through challenges and stay focused on their goals. At SCTCC, we are intentional about strengthening and expanding that circle of support by creating an environment where students feel welcomed, valued, and empowered to succeed from the moment they arrive.
Our faculty share their expertise, passion, and a deep commitment to student learning. Our staff help students navigate admissions, registration, financial aid, career planning, and countless other steps along the way. Together, they create a culture grounded in the belief that every student has the capacity to succeed when provided with the right opportunities and support.
That commitment is reflected in the new Wedum Center for Student Success. Designed as a welcoming environment filled with natural light and spaces for collaboration, reflection, and study, the Center provides students with a place to connect, recharge, and thrive. Most importantly, student success navigators are readily available to offer guidance, resources, and a listening ear when challenges arise. And because challenges are inevitable, students need to know there is a community ready to support them every step of the way.
Students also benefit from the freedom to pursue programs aligned with their interests, talents, and aspirations. Whether their goal is immediate employment through one of our career and technical programs or continued education through a transfer pathway, SCTCC provides options that meet students where they are and help them reach their goals.
For those planning to earn a bachelor's degree, our partnership with St. Cloud State University creates a seamless pathway forward. On-site support and transfer guidance help students navigate the transition with confidence, ensuring they understand their options and remain on track to achieve their educational goals.
The strength of our workforce, the vitality of our economy, and the future prosperity of our region depend on people who are willing to learn, grow, and lead. Higher education provides the foundation for that growth. It equips students with the skills employers need, cultivates critical thinking and innovation, and opens doors that might otherwise remain closed.
Most importantly, it transforms possibilities into reality.
Take, for example, Gabrielle Umerski. After spending eight years working as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Gabrielle returned to college because she wanted to expand her ability to serve others and increase her impact on healthcare. At SCTCC, she excelled academically, embraced leadership opportunities, and was selected as the student speaker at Commencement.
Her message to fellow graduates was simple but powerful: Growth is not a destination; it is an ongoing journey. Gabrielle's story is not unique. It reflects the experiences of thousands of students who have chosen to take that first step despite uncertainty, competing responsibilities, or self-doubt. Their willingness to start is what makes transformation possible.
When I look across our campus, I see students like Gabrielle. I see future health care providers, manufacturers, entrepreneurs, business leaders, educators, and community advocates. I am inspired by their determination, resilience, and optimism. Every success story begins with a single decision to start. That first step may be uncertain, but it is also filled with extraordinary potential.
At St. Cloud Technical & Community College, we are proud to walk alongside our students as they pursue their goals and build brighter futures. Together, we are strengthening lives, expanding opportunities, and creating a skilled workforce that will drive prosperity for generations to come.
That first step is not always easy. It often requires courage, sacrifice, and perseverance. It is also where opportunity begins.
Greatness does not start with having all the answers. It begins with taking the first step. And for thousands of students, that step starts at SCTCC.
