Preston Mescall giving two thumbs up
I’m a very go-with-the-flow type of dude. Like, I am the wind, you know?
By Kate Wallace

Architectural Construction Technology student Preston Mescall is ready to bring back the shag carpet room.

“Have you ever seen one of those? It’s so gross because it captures all the smell, but it’s so cool because it’s head-to-toe shag carpet. It’s the ugliest thing on earth, but I want that,” Preston shared.

It’s only the second week of classes, so Preston isn’t sure how the rest of his classmates feel about shag carpet, but he does know they all love housing, no matter their tastes in interior design.

The Sauk Rapids-Rice High School graduate is ready to take on the cookie-cutter housing industry. Preston has always liked art and drawing and becoming an architect was a way to incorporate his creativity in a career. The design of modern houses, he’s decided, needs a change. He also encourages everyone to not be afraid to paint walls a color.

“It adds more color to your life. If you have color or something different – maybe you’re thinking more openly, more deeply into things and new experiences,” he noted. More ideas? Get some plants, different kinds of end tables, or bold couches.

Unsurprisingly, Preston has considered interior design after finishing his degree at SCTCC. But his plans are unplanned, so to speak. “I’m a very go-with-the-flow type of dude. Like, I am the wind, you know?”

Speaking of staying in the moment, he knew that SCTCC was for him immediately. It was one of his first choices, and after a tour, that was all it took. Now, two weeks in, he’s even more sure. The people are engaging, campus is nice, and his instructors are helpful, even if he’s not sure everyone is on board with his shag carpet room resurgence.
