Student Learning Outcomes
In this course, students will focus on critical analysis and appreciation of culturally diverse readings, while refining their academic English reading fluency. Students will increase their proficiency in reading strategies, vocabulary acquisition, and comprehension. Using academic, professional, and culturally diverse reading material, students will learn reading techniques to help them become strategic readers and learners and develop personal, critical responses to texts. Students will expand cultural knowledge to interpret context-based written materials. This three-credit course is intended for students who score 86 and above on the ESL Reading Accuplacer. To maximize student learning, this course has been developed to be taken with ESOL 1310 and ESOL 1330. This course provides an equitable opportunity for English Learners to improve in high-level academic skills in their non-native language. Student Learning Outcomes

- Identify topic, stated and implied main ideas, and major and minor details.
- Evaluate diverse, authentic texts written from various points of view.
- Determine purpose and tone in expository and narrative texts.
- Discriminate facts versus opinions in expository and narrative texts.
- Utilize cultural context clues needed to comprehend academic written materials.
- Analyze a variety of writing formats and features for general and cultural comprehension.
- Demonstrate comprehension of college-level texts from various disciplines.
