Student Learning Outcomes
Meets MN Transfer Curriculum Goal Area 1 - Written Communication. English Language Learners in this course will develop English written communication skills appropriate for academic settings. This course will focus on English language acquisition and writing skills through production of various written work. Students will be introduced to ethical inclusion of secondary sources into their written work. Students will expand cultural knowledge related to Minnesota and the United States to compose context-appropriate written material. This three-credit course is intended for students who score 86 and above on the ESL Reading Accuplacer and is not intended to replace ENGL 1308, ENGL 1309, or ENGL 1312. To maximize student learning, this course has been developed to be taken with ESOL 1320 and ESOL 1330. This course provides an equitable opportunity for Language Learners to improve their high-level academic skills in English. To fulfill the Goal Area One requirement of the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum or the Associate of Arts Degree, students who take this course must also complete ENGL 1308: Stretch Analytical Writing I and ENGL 1309: Stretch Analytical Writing II. or ENGL 1312. - Write essays with basic introductions, thesis statements, and conclusions.
- Demonstrate the writing process through invention, organization, drafting, revision, editing, and presentation.
- Employ written organizational standards appropriate to a variety of academic tasks.
- Use a word processing program to write and format essays.
- Synthesize information into original academic writing.
- Select appropriate topics and communication choices for specific audiences.
- Employ syntax and usage conventions of academic English for essay writing.
- Correct errors in English grammar, semantics, mechanics common to English Language Learners through revision and editing.
- Apply the correct use of citation styles.
- Incorporate sources through summary, paraphrase, and quotation.
