Student Learning Outcomes

This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge of what they are to do in an athletic related emergency before medical help arrives. Participants will be instructed to recognize and respond to athletic emergencies. This course will focus on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillator (AED) use, how to respond in a choking situation, and basic first aid related to athletic competition. Students will have the opportunity to earn American Heart Association 1st Aid, CPR and AED certification. This course will provide introductory skills needed by coaches expected to provide initial care of injured athletes. Areas covered by this course will include Anatomy and Kinesiology. Participants will gain knowledge of injury prevention and care and rehabilitation. Practical skills in taping, splinting, wrapping, CPR/AED, choking and spine stabilization will be demonstrated.Student Learning Outcomes
  • Identify ways to prevent injury and/or illness in an athletic setting.
  • Assess sports related emergencies.
  • Respond appropriately to sports related emergencies.
  • Administer CPR and choking intervention.
  • Provide basic care for an athletic injury or sudden illness.
  • Communicate effectively in an emergency.
  • Demonstrate the correct use of AED.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of care and prevention for athletic injuries.
  • Apply proper taping, bandaging, wrapping, and bracing techniques for athletic injuries.
  • Analyze legal issues in caring for athletic injuries.
  • Examine specific injuries to the human anatomy.
  • Recognize emergency and environmental conditions.
  • Manage the healing process of athletic injuries.
