Meets Mn Transfer Curriculum Goal Area 5 and 9 -History and the Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Ethical and Civic Responsibility. This course provides a broad introduction to the Holocaust and genocide studies. Through readings, films, and discussion, students can analyze the Holocaust and other genocides, beginning with the genocide of Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous removal of the Dakota, Ojibwe, and Ho-Chunk from Minnesota. Historical events and perspectives which surround the genocides will be examined. Students will study ongoing global conflicts leading to genocide and how they are related to past genocides.Student Learning Outcomes

- Explore Holocaust and genocide literature through survivor memories
- Examine themes in specific literary pieces of Holocaust and genocide literature.
- Explore the use of propaganda and its contribution to the mindset of hate.
- Identify historical events and people surrounding the Holocaust and other genocides.
- Define Holocaust and genocide terms.
- Identify current conflicts that are or could be genocidal.
- Outline current recommendations and resources to enable continued participation in genocide awareness and prevention.
