Student Learning Outcomes
Meets MN Transfer Curriculum Goal Area 6 - Humanities and Fine Arts and Goal Area 8 - Global Perspective. This course will examine musical soundscapes, traditional instruments, and cultural perspectives of traditional, folk, and pop genres from major musical traditions in Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, East Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Oceana, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Students will develop basic skills in critical listening, intercultural awareness, analysis, and writing about music. Student Learning Outcomes
- Analyze the elements of music and their function in selected music examples.
- Examine how each culture's musical ensembles, instruments, ceremony, and ritual are tied to its music.
- Compare diverse cultural, social, religious, and linguistic differences in selected musical examples.
- Explain how music, culture, and language are integral to a culture's identity.
- Understand cultural perspectives outside of student's immediate realm of experience through music.
- Demonstrate how music is being used in our culture and communities today.
