Student Learning Outcomes
Meets MN Transfer Curriculum Goal Area 6 - Humanities and Fine Arts. This course examines the evolution of popular music in the United States from the mid 1800s to today. Students will explore the history and societal influences that created musical compositions that we still listen to and are influenced by today. Topics will include music technology, music and dance, music as an expression of identity and gender, music and race, music as a theatrical experience, and musical influences from around the world. Students will develop basic skills in critical listening, musical analysis, and writing about music.Student Learning Outcomes
- Analyze the elements of music and their function in selected music examples.
- Examine the historical and societal influences found in popular music of the United States.
- Categorize important style characteristics and musical genres of popular music in the United States.
- Identify music, composers, and performers within each musical era.
- Compare writings and new research on popular music.
- Demonstrate how popular music from the United States has influenced other music styles.
