Student Learning Outcomes
Meets Mn Transfer Curriculum Goal Area 6 - Humanities and Fine Arts. This course examines the creative role of music in human celebrations, commemorations, rituals, and entertainment from early music to contemporary music examples. Students will explore the musical norms and performance practices that were followed in each era to gain an understanding of the time in which each musical piece was written. Topics will include how music expresses the world around us in nature and urban environments, in religion and life events like births, weddings, funerals, and in societal structures like class divisions and politics, and how music is a creative venue for popular entertainment. Students will develop basic skills in critical listening, musical analysis, and writing about music.Student Learning Outcomes
- Analyze the elements of music and their function in selected music examples.
- Identify music, composers, and performers within each musical era.
- Categorize important style characteristics and musical genres within each musical era.
- Examine the historical and societal influences in the creation and performance of live music.
- Articulate the function of music, and it's intended performance space, within each style era.
- Demonstrate how contemporary music and performance spaces have been influenced by previous eras of music.
