PHYS1305

Student Learning Outcomes

Meets MN Transfer Curriculum Goal Ara 3 - Natural Sciences. This course covers the fundamentals of physics at a conceptual level in Mechanics, Properties of Matter, Heat, Sound, Electricity, and Magnetism. This is an introductory course in Physics, which underlines the essential concepts, vocabulary, and applications of physics. This course provides a conceptual base of knowledge for students who plan to continue with higher-level physics courses. Alternatively, it provides a breadth of physics knowledge appropriate for students who do not plan to pursue a career in science or engineering. This course encompasses a lab component that emphasizes measurement, result prediction, data collection, and data analysis. Student Learning Outcomes
  • Apply the concepts of physics in the areas of Mechanics, Properties of Matter, Heat, Sound, Electricity and Magnetism.
  • Expound on the linear motion of objects-speed, velocity, acceleration, circular motion, projectile motion, and Newton's law of motions.
  • Illustrate fundamentals related to conservation of momentum and energy.
  • Define the angular motion of objects-angular velocity, angular acceleration, torque, and angular momentum.
  • Paraphrase the introductory concepts of heat and thermodynamics, including pressure, temperature, thermal expansion, heat transfer, change of phases, and the first and second laws of thermodynamics.
  • Interpret basic principles of wave propagation and oscillations.
  • Use various concepts of electricity and magnetism such as Coulomb's law, Ohm's law, series circuit, and parallel circuit.
  • Differentiate between direct and inverse relationships among different physical quantities and explain how change in one quantity affects another quantity.
  • Conduct experiments to evaluate hypotheses and mathematical formulas.
  • Demonstrate experimental expertise through taking precise measurements, collecting, analyzing, tabulating, and interpreting data.
  • Analyze "real world" problems to calculate or estimate solutions using problem solving techniques.
