The Introduction to Studio Art class had their artwork on display in the hallway near Door 6 – two students who have artwork featured shared their experience in the class.
Allison Roisland and Samara Juhl both have hobbies or past experiences that involve art, so taking the class was something that made sense to both of them. Roisland is working on her generals to transfer for a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, and Juhl is working on generals after earning a Welding degree recently. She’s planning on transferring for a bachelor’s in Applied Engineering.
Juhl’s artwork was inspired by a Picasso-style, zooming in on a subject until it’s abstract, with flowers as her subject. Roisland liked how cross-hatching with pen looked, so she worked on a cross-hatched drawing of bugs.
“I really enjoy this class,” said Roisland. “It’s fun for me to have the creative freedom that [instructor Paula Brandel Ryder] gives us to be able to turn it into our own art. I like how she grades on how much effort you put into it.”
Both would recommend this class to anyone who needs a generals class, even if they aren't planning on majoring in art. In addition to being able to stretch your creativity and learn different skills, according to Roisland, taking an arts class takes your mind off all the other tests and studying that’s a part of other classes.
“You can see people who have never done art and need to do it for generals, and they can come in and still have a good time,” said Juhl.
The display was recently replaced with a display from the summer digital photography class, but watch the space as different classes’ artwork is rotated in.
“All the art classes we offer have a wide variety of projects, so you get to explore within the specific medium we’re studying. The display case is an important part of our classes because it gives the students the opportunity to show off what they’re working on,” said Brandel Ryder. “It also shows the campus community the variety of artworks created in these courses.”
