Here at SCTCC, we are getting ready for our 75th Anniversary Celebration and everyone has pitched in.
When Electrical instructor Craig Fischer floated the idea of a big 75 made out of conduit, the committee for the celebration was definitely on board; anything made by our students is something we would be happy to display!
Craig went back to his class with a sketch and the opportunity to “try something crazy,” oh and a reward of lab credits, too. The first four students to raise their hands got the job.
Owen Hill, Blaine Fischer, Cole Fuchs, and Tyler Jenson got to work on bending conduit into the seven and five, with three lengths for each number.
“I told them I am okay if you need to install a couple couplings, and the boys responded with ‘we are going to do this without couplings,’” said Craig. “As an instructor, I know how hard it can be to do just one, nevertheless three [conduits] that look the same.”
When Craig brought down the seven and five attached on stabilizing platforms, he turned on the lights that the students had fastened around the perimeter of the numbers, making it glow. He explained that there was very little waste with the project, which he was impressed by, and showed where he would have been ok with a coupling. He was more than happy with the students’ work and how they turned out.
“I couldn’t be more proud with the outcome of these signs,” said Craig.
You can see the 75 light up the stage at the 75th Anniversary Celebration on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. in the Commons. There will also be cupcakes, conversation, a reading of a proclamation, and sharing of SCTCC stories.
