Several SCTCC students took part in the statewide SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference held April 7-10 in Minneapolis, and two are set to represent SCTCC at the national level.

The state championships bring together nearly 1,000 students who compete in 80+ trade, technical, and leadership filed. Contests are run with help from industry, trade associations, and labor organizations, with the competencies set by industry.

Each program was able to send up to six students to compete at the state level, and the Automotives and Medium/Heavy Truck programs also sent post-secondary enrollment option (PSEO) students to take part in the high school-level competition.

Auto Body student Noah Scherping from Albany placed third in Refinishing.

Automotives student Joe Baratta from St. Cloud finished second, and PSEO student Jon Thayer of Sartell placed third in the high school level competition.

Culinary student Mercedes Wilson from Sartell placed third.

Electrical Construction students grabbed several top spots: Nick Lanham from Brainerd placed first and Stephen Grogg of Waite Park placed second in Electrical Construction Wiring. In Industrial Motor Control, Ryan Madsen from Elk River placed second and Pierce Heinze of Sauk Centre placed third.

HVAC/R students swept the winners’ podium with a first, second, and third place finish by Alec Schrupp of Glencoe, Jasper Burma of Milaca, and Joe Skroch of Foley, respectively.

Medium/Heavy Truck PSEO student Warren Schwieger of NowThen placed second in the Diesel Technology competition.

First-place winners Nick Lanham in Electrical Construction and Alec Schrupp in HVAC/R will have the opportunity to participate in the National Leadership and Skills Conference, which will be held June 20-24 in Atlanta, Ga.
