Students Kody Alickson (Electrical Construction), Spencer Doran (Auto Body), and Carson Richter (HVAC/R) represented SCTCC well at the 2023 National SkillsUSA competition held in Atlanta June 17-23.
Carson placed first in the Minnesota competition, and Kody and Spencer each placed second and were able to attend after the first-place winners declined to attend. Josiah Carlson (Medium/Heavy Truck) had placed first at the state level but was unable to attend the national competition.
“I was proud of all the students and the efforts they put into the contests, along with their respect and maturity while they were there,” said Randy Kidder, HVAC/R instructor.
Carson competed in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration event as well as copper brazing and refrigeration identification and placed ninth in the nation.
Kody competed in the Electrical Construction Wiring event and placed 9th in the nation.
Spencer competed in the Collision Repair Technology event and placed 13th in the nation.
“The SkillsUSA competition from start to finish is a great opportunity for our students to showcase what they’ve learned while at SCTCC and is one more way to build experience that they’ll need in the workforce,” said Dean of Trades & Industry Steve Hoemberg. “Without dedicated and highly skilled faculty, none of this would be possible. Congratulations to the students and faculty who represented SCTCC at the national level!”
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry member to make sure the country has a skilled workforce by helping students excel and reach their potential. Nationally, SkillsUSA serves nearly half a million student members.
Seven SCTCC students had placed at the state SkillsUSA competition in March and April.
