Spotlight: Brian Volkmuth
Information Technology Instructor, Faculty Advisor to Student Veterans Club
A central Minnesota native, Brian Volkmuth has been involved in numerous veterans organizations and events since returning to the area following his enlistment in the U.S. Marine Corps (1985-1989).
Brian served with distinction in the Signals Intelligence field as a Manual Morse Code Intercept Operator, was name Marine of the year for Company C, MARSPTBN NAVCAMS WESTPAC Guam in 1988, received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service ribbon with 2 stars, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation medal and Expert Rifleman badge. Brian served at NTTC Corry Station, Pensacola FL, NAVCAMS WESTPAC Guam, Camp Schwab, Okinawa where he attended Non-Commissioned Officers School.
Brian left the Marine Corps in November of 1989 with the rank of E-4/Corporal. Brian met PO CTT Alicia Keller in Pensacola in 1988 and have will have been married 33 years this October.
Some of the organizations Brian has been involved with include the Marine Corps League, Student Veterans' Organization at SCTCC, SCSU and Metro State University, Disabled American Veterans, and currently serves as a board member of the HomeFront Resource Center (HRC).
Professionally, he has been an Information Technology Infrastructure instructor at SCTCC since January 2011. Additionally, he has been the faculty advisor to student Veterans Club at SCTCC since 2011. Brian holds an AAS degree in Network Administration from SCTCC, a BS of Information Assurance from Metro State and a Master of Science degree in Information Assurance from SCSU.
Brian’s family includes 5 adult children and 2 adopted kids, and 5 grandchildren. His family has also fostered several children, adopted 2 foster kids, and have a foster son currently serving in the Marine Corps as a heavy equipment mechanic.
SCTCC recognizes its employee Veterans during the months of October and November.
October is Veterans’ Voices month. Since 2013, the Minnesota Humanities Center has honored Minnesota Veterans who, in myriad ways, contribute to their communities, state, and country.
