Student Learning Outcomes
This course is a comprehensive introduction to the International Classification of Diseases-Clinical Modification (ICD-CM) coding system, including the basic principles, guidelines, and conventions of ICD-CM coding. Coursework includes classification and indexing of diagnoses for each body system and condition type, as well as external causes. Knowledge of Clinical Modification (CM) coding is critical as the student progresses into advanced coding classes. Student Learning Outcomes
- Describe the history of the ICD-CM classification system, as well as current use in the delivery of healthcare.
- Abstract clinical information from medical documentation using Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Pathophysiology knowledge for appropriate classification.
- Determine the appropriate ICD-CM codes and sequences based on official CPT Coding conventions and guidelines.
- Evaluate code assignment for accurate reimbursement from payer sources.
- Comply with American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) standards of ethical coding.
