Student Learning Outcomes
This course covers the components of quality improvement models using practical tools for problem solving, decision making, goal setting, and implementation. Students will explore risks that are managed using performance improvement activities in a Health Information department, including the various health record requirements, their sources, and reasons for the requirements. Students will also identify how technology affects the quality of documentation, and procedures to ensure quality documentation is generated. Activities include applying documentation policies through chart analysis and creating a quality improvement process to improve the documentation.

- Identify performance improvement standards from various healthcare organizations, and Health Information Management's role in tracking and reporting on performance indicators.
- Explain the principles of risk management, including the impact of sentinel events and social determinants of health on identifying, assessing, and mitigating healthcare risks.
- Compare and contrast the compliance requirements from various regulatory sources.
- Summarize the impact of quality outcomes on cost-effective healthcare.
- Define various data set criteria and their impact on quality of care.
- Apply data collection and quality improvement tools.
- Identify utilization management components.
- Audit health record data for clinical documentation improvement opportunities, compliance, performance issues and risks, and report on issues and trends.
- Apply leadership principles to guide services and lead others in quality assessment and improvement processes.
- Explain Institutional Review Board policies and procedures.
