As SCTCC shifts to virtual learning for a 2 week period, instructors are once again put in the sometimes tricky position of providing high quality learning opportunities and engagement for students in a virtual setting. The CTL hosted two virtual learning discussion sessions this past week to see what was on your mind in regards to this shift. Here are the top 5 tips instructors shifting to virtual learning.
Use what you already have.
Many classes already have some virtual aspects. Use the framework you already have set up that students are beginning to become familiar with instead of reinventing the wheel.
Keep in mind what was successful in Spring 2020 and beyond.
Many of us have much more experience now that we did in Spring 2020 when we had to pivot to remote instruction for the first time. Think back to semesters when you taught mostly or completely online and determine what was successful and what fell flat during those times. Think about what students seemed to respond well to and what they struggled with and use this knowledge to create a strong virtual environment this semester.
Keep in touch with students.
Did you know that you have access to students’ home phone and personal email address? If you are finding students dropping off from your D2L page or Zoom meetings during the shift to virtual learning, be sure to reach out to them to check in and be sure they have the tools they need to succeed.
Communicate with your dean.
Be sure to keep in touch with your dean to let them know your needs when it comes to virtual learning. Your dean may be able to suggest a variety of virtual formats that could work well in your specific discipline.
Let the CTL know what support you need.
Another great thing we have during this shift to virtual learning that we didn’t have back in Spring 2020 is the Center for Teaching and Learning. Instructors can reach out with questions or ideas. Please use the CTL to support your shift to virtual learning this semester.
