The 2017 Martin Luther King Jr. Art Competition winners were announced on Monday, Jan. 23, at an awards presentation in the SCTCC Commons.
The first-place winner was “Breaking Silence” by Coda Johnson and Austin Gansman, a welded steel microphone.
In second place was Adam Speath with “Through the Times,” a mixed media portrait of Martin Luther King Jr. and former President Barack Obama.
There was a tie for third place: Mahmoudou Sandwidi’s acrylic on canvas portrait, “Nelson Mandela” and Jessi Ewald’s digital photographs on the subject of sexual violence, “Speak Up.”
The other participants include: Jake Welle with “We Cannot Walk Alone;” Janel Helms with “Lost Hope;” Ben Totzke with “Dr. King;” Crystal Giffen with “Untitled;” and Rebecca Boedigheimer with “Hope is in the Hands of the Beholder.”
The artwork will be on display this week in the hallway with the 300 classrooms.
