SCTCC hosted one of Governor Mark Dayton’s Town Hall discussions on how to improve Minnesota’s water quality by 25 percent by 2025. One of ten Town Halls across the state, the event at SCTCC was attended by state leadership, clean water advocates, local farmers, business owners and the general public.
Interim President Lori Kloos kicked off discussions on water quality by highlighting the importance of SCTCC’s Water Environment Technology program. The event’s large turnout was a testament to the significant need for professionals entering the field of water treatment, as well as the importance of SCTCC’s role in offering the state’s only AAS degree program in water treatment.
Following short talks by Governor Dayton, Minnesota’s Health Commissioner and owners of a local family farm, attendees began group brainstorming sessions focused on how to reach the Governor’s ambitious water quality goal. Each group then shared their top ideas and suggestions with the larger group.
Hearing from both the public and private sectors throughout the event made it clear there are no simple answers to the issue of improving water quality in Minnesota. The Town Hall discussions also highlighted the fact that Minnesotans will need to continue working together to accomplish the goal.
