Over the summer, Kami Burgess, Dental Hygiene instructor, took one of her current students and two graduates to Grenada for a dental mission trip.

Current student Helayna Larson and grads Athena Landa and Chelsea Scapanski joined Burgess and other dental professionals to provide dental care to people on the island. The group treated 1,070 people with 500 cleanings, 46 root canals, 308 extracted teeth, and 463 fillings.
This is Burgess’ eighth dental mission trip to the Caribbean and first time to Grenada to help those who would otherwise not have dental care.
“It’s always special to serve others with dental care, but for me it’s even more rewarding to have students along,” said Burgess. “I love seeing them gain understanding about how their dental skills can change lives.”
Larson had always wanted to go on a mission trip, so when Burgess mentioned Grenada in early spring, she jumped at the chance.
"It was just something I couldn't miss out on!" she said. "This was the perfect opportunity to learn more about my field, help the local people of Grenada, and of course get to see a new part of the world."
Larson mentioned that the trip allowed her to see what her second year of classes would be like, as well as get experience working with a dentist in extractions and fillings. It was also eye opening to see what kind of oral health the people of Grenada had. "Some were well versed in their oral health and care, and some had probably never picked up a toothbrush," Larson said.
It wasn’t all work, however. While they were in Grenada, they were able to tour and learn the history of the island, visit a cacao factory, swim in waterfalls, played with monkeys, and enjoyed food and local community.
"Using just a little of what we know and do can have an impact if we give just a little time," Larson summed up. "The importance of taking my time to give back to others is something I will always focus on thanks to this trip."
