What is the difference between
ESOL classes and ENGL/READ 0900 classes?
ESOL Classes... | ENGL/READ 0900 Classes... |
Time is spent focusing on grammar and academic vocabulary, including idioms and figures of speech. | Time is spent learning principles of writing well (organization, clarity, development, focus, etc.). |
Students apply grammar and vocabulary learning to complete college-level reading, writing, listening and speaking assignments. | Students engage in the process of active reading using critical reading strategies. |
We spend time on common language-focused topics (i.e. grammar, academic vocabulary, idioms, figures of speech) that are pertinent to English Language Learners. | We do not explicitly teach grammar and vocabulary and may not have time to address language-focused questions or topics. |
ESOL classes cover much more grammar and vocabulary than 0900 classes.
English Language Learners’ language needs are often not met in READ/ENGL 0900.
