Cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, and so are the tools we use to protect your account and college data. The good news? Upcoming security enhancements will strengthen protection for your StarID account while reducing the need for routine password changes.
Beginning October 1, 2026, Minnesota State will introduce updates to StarID passwords and multifactor authentication (MFA). Most of you will not need to take any action immediately, but it's helpful to know what changes are ahead.
Longer Passwords, Less Frequent Changes
When it's time to change or reset your StarID password, it will need to meet updated security requirements.
When you are prompted to change your password, it will need to:
- Be at least 15 characters long
- Include a combination of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters
- Not contain your name or previously used passwords
A passphrase, such as a short sentence or memorable combination of words, is the recommended approach because it is both easier to remember and harder to crack. Your current password will remain valid until it expires or is reset.
Even better, once you update to a password that meets the new requirements, routine password expiration requirements will eventually be eliminated.
MFA Modernization
Microsoft is retiring SMS text messages and phone calls as multifactor authentication (MFA) methods. Users who currently rely on these methods will need to transition to a supported authentication option, such as the Microsoft Authenticator app, before February 1, 2027.
Beginning October 1, 2026, users who are not using a supported MFA method may be prompted to update their MFA settings. While users will initially have the option to select "Skip" and continue working, they are encouraged to complete the transition as soon as possible.
Starting January 19, 2027, the number of times a user can select "Skip" will be limited to three. Beginning February 1, 2027, users who have not completed the transition will be required to update their MFA method to continue accessing Microsoft 365-enabled services.
SCTCC IT is currently reviewing the MFA changes and discussing campus impacts with leadership. Additional details, timelines, and support resources will be shared.
What Do I Need to Do Now?
Nothing.
Most Cyclones do not need to take any action at this time. SCTCC IT will provide updates, instructions, and support as these security improvements are rolled out.
