Brian Volkmuth, Information Technology instructor, recently visited Monticello High School with Erich Rice from SCSU where more than 170 students got to hear about the cybersecurity industry, fundamental concepts of the field, and scholarship opportunities.
Volkmuth and Rice presented an overview of the different roles in cybersecurity and the importance and demand for skilled professionals. They then introduced the students to concepts such as network security, ethical hacking, data privacy, and threat detection.
Volkmuth outlined the Cybersecurity AAS and the skillsets acquired for their future careers, as well as the scholarship opportunities available through the Dept. of Defense and NSA.
The students had several questions for Volkmuth and Rice, getting clarity on career paths, skills needed, and how to apply for the scholarships.
The outreach is a collaborative effort between SCTCC and SCSU and was made possible through a grant from the Dept. of Defense and the National Security Agency to cultivate interest in cybersecurity careers at the high school level.
