The 2020 Student Recognition Event was different than in years past, but the student achievements were just as meaningful.
Around 40 SCTCC students in their second or more year at the college were nominated by different clubs and departments on campus. Shaun Keeley, Interim Student Life Director, presented the recognized students in a Zoom meeting where he read what nominators said about the students.
About midway through, there was a moment of silence to honor Garrett Denne, an SCTCC student who passed away this past year.
The Haller Athletes were announced at the end of the ceremony, which is presented to student athletes who exemplify the qualities of a Cyclone: superior competitor, quality students, and outstanding citizen.
The Male Athlete of the Year was a tie.
Taye Carter, St. Paul, MN, Men’s Basketball: Taye leaves the Cyclones basketball program as the all-time leading rebounder in program history. Taye and his teammates won back to back conference titles. In addition, the Cyclones earned the program’s first trip to the NJCAA National Tournament. Off the court, Taye’s dedication to academics and leadership moved the team forward in the classroom. He has earned a 3.84 gpa during his time at SCTCC. Taye is an incredible teammate and an amazing person who competed at all times in practice and games.
Will Funk, Sauk Centre, MN, Baseball: As a freshman, Will, earned 1st team All American Honors and helped lead the Cyclones to a Region runner up in 2019 while the Cyclones earned a . In the classroom, Will is earning his Electrical Construction degree in May while earning a 3.97 gpa. Will was a captain of the baseball team and is considered one of the best leaders in program history.
The Female Athlete of the Year was Paige Serbus from Olivia, MN. Paige competed for both Cyclones Volleyball and Softball during her time at SCTCC. She was a member of the 2019 Softball team who won the Region 13A tournament and participated in 3 region tournaments in her two years at SCTCC. Paige’s positive attitude and Paige is graduating in May with her Associate in Arts Degree. Paige earned player of the week honors and All-Conference honors. She has earned a 3.71 gpa. In her free time, Paige bakes and decorates cakes. She will be continuing her academic and volleyball career next year at Hamline University.
