When you think SCTCC, one of your first thoughts might be collaboration. And it’s true – there is a lot of collaboration between the college and industry partners, community, and other colleges and universities. But what you might not think of right away is strong on-campus partnerships.
In the Electrical program, one of the required classes is Drafting Blueprint Reading and Specification, and as part of that, students learn how to measure rooms. Instructor Craig Fischer connected with Njeri Clement at the Multicultural Center about having his class measure the Center’s space as practice. The class stopped by at the end of September to measure the space and, for some, to visit it for the first time.
“We’re learning a lot of useful information,” noted Marco Hernandez, who is from Chicago. In addition to getting the measurements he needed, he was very impressed by the space and planned to return now that he had seen it.
In the spirit of collaboration and to prepare students for their careers, Clement hosts a Trades Summit that instructors are happy to bring their classes to: “Connecting Global to Local.” The summit exposes student to international perspectives on workforce skills, industry expectations, and career opportunities in the international market. With the increased global industries, students learn perspectives that prepare them for success.
The work that SCTCC instructors and staff do together is rewarding, not just for the instructors and staff involved, but to students as well. Whether it’s taking a class field trip to learn how to measure in different spaces or discovering what the global career market looks like, when SCTCC works together, students, their families, and the community benefit.
