Accessibility Services’ Note Taking Policy and Procedure follows a student self-advocacy model, to support student self-efficacy and responsibility of their accommodations. The Note Taking Accommodations approves a qualified student with disability for a Volunteer Supplemental Note Taker in their classes.
- The note taker accommodation is only eligible for classes held in person or hybrid. This accommodation not eligible for online classes.
- It is the responsibility of the student to reach out to their note taker to arrange a method to receive the notes. This could be sending them after class via email, having the note taker take photos of the notes and sending them via text, or meeting after class to take photos or make (free) copies in Accessibility Services.
- Note takers are volunteer based, meaning that this accommodation cannot be guaranteed if no students in the class are willing to volunteer.
- Note takers are supplemental, meaning that students with this accommodation are still required to take their own notes.
- Students with this accommodation are still required to attend class. Note takers are not required to share their notes if the student was absent from class.
- Accessibility Services will never give out the student’s name to their note taker. The note taker’s information will be sent to the student, and the student is expected to make first contact. Upon request, Accessibility Services can facilitate the conversation.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the SCTCC Accessibility Services Note Taking Policy, please contact Accessibility Services (acc@sctcc.edu).

The Role: Note takers provide supplemental notes to students with disabilities in the classroom.
If are looking to volunteer for a class:
- Please email Accessibility Services (acc@sctcc.edu) the course name, the course number, and the instructor’s name of the class you would like to note take for.
- Once we have received that email and verified that a student has requested note taking services for that class, we will send you an email with a short form (https://forms.office.com/r/0Fyjp5Yngb) regarding confidentiality. Please fill out that form and return it as soon as possible.
- After we have received the completed form from you, we will provide the student requesting service with your name and SCTCC email so that they can get in contact with you to receive the notes.
Volunteer note takers are eligible for:
- 50 volunteer service hours
- A certificate recognizing their 50 volunteer service hours
Volunteer service hours are a great resume booster and can meet some requirements for jobs, 4-year university admission, acceptance into Greek Life (sororities and fraternities), and more! It is a great way to add to your resume without additional time requirements since you will already be in class taking notes.
