At SCTCC, we teach our students in the Finance program the required communication, relationship-management, marketing and sales, project management ability, and problem-solving skills needed to succeed in the workforce.

Our students are equipped with effective communication skills. In the workforce, graduates will be able to communicate their knowledge with strong speaking, writing, and presentation skills.

We teach our students the necessary relationship-management skills to ensure our graduates succeed as a financial professional. Relationship-management skills are required to understand different personality types, effectively listen, ask the right questions, resolve conflicts, educate others, and counsel future clients in future careers.

At SCTCC, we ensure every student has effective marketing and sales skills. All financial professionals need to understand marketing and sales because they have to market their professional skills and knowledge to prospects in their respected markets. Students will understand how to both “sell” their personal strengths and their firm's professional strengths.

With a degree in Finance, graduates have skills in project management ability, organizational skills, and attention to detail. Our students know how to manage their own schedule in terms of time, budgets, and deadlines, and can successfully do so for others.

After graduation, students are equipped with problem-solving skills. In the real-world, there will be problems that will inevitably happen during any job, but our graduates have the skills to effectively and efficiently problem-solve any issue that comes their way.

Graduates from the SCTCC Finance program have a variety of job opportunities. Our students have worked with commercial banks, credit unions, finance companies, collection agencies, medical facilities, mortgage companies, and property management associations.

Our students have even found rewarding careers in the credit and business departments of retail, wholesale, and other service organizations.

Banks are a primary focus of the finance industry where students can venture into retail banking for families, individuals, or corporate banking that meets the needs of business, governments, and the public sectors.

Students in the banking industry have job opportunities with high level advisory work, managing processes, customer services, legal work, accountancy, IT, marketing, and human resources.

Insurance companies are another source of careers for Finance graduates. Insurance can be classified into two main categories, general business of insurance and long-term business of insurance.

In insurance, the types of careers may include manager and legal advisor work in brokering, underwriting, loss adjusting, claims management, customer service, sales, compliance and risk management, financial reporting, and even client advisory.

Underwriting for insurance companies is a specialization involving detailed analysis of the different aspects of proposals submitted by customers to insurance companies. Compliance for insurance companies is the process of ensuring that the insurance company is doing business according to standards established by law.

Investment and financial advisor companies also present many opportunities to SCTCC Finance graduates. The careers under the investment services industry use special skills, knowledge and expertise to invest money on behalf of their clients or to advise clients on how to best use their money.

As a financial advisor, a student would give instructions to private citizens on how to best manage their financial affairs. Some financial advisers work in banks while others work in independent specialist firms. They advise all types of customers, from people with modest amounts for investment to the very wealthy.

A day in the life of a SCTCC Finance graduate consists of working as a trade financer for Capital One and utilizing the communication and problem-solving skills they learned in our classrooms.

The SCTCC Finance program currently has a transfer agreement with Minnesota State University Moorhead's Bachelor of Science in Finance.
